I started waving frantically too, jumping up and down with one arm over my bra. Bean stopped running after a few yards, but Jen kept sprinting for a good fifty. But when my mom’s arm popped out the window waving back, I stopped jumping and Jen stopped running. And then—I swear to God—over the music seeping out from the gym, I actually heard my mom yell, “Have fun, girls!” as she drove out of the parking lot and out onto the road.

I couldn’t believe it. I was going to have to kill her. Kill her! Poor Dad would be very sad, but I was sure he’d understand.

Bean and Jen jogged back to us, panting and looking horrified.

“Good try, Sweets.” Cate put her hand on Jen’s back. Everyone stared at me, speechless. Finally, Cate said seductively, “Wow, Paisley. Have you been working out?”

Jen started it, trying not to laugh. But then Cate and Bean joined in. Jen lost it. By the time Amy and Carreyn realized it was safe to laugh at me, everyone was howling.

“Not funny!” I screamed, feeling my body temperature shooting up despite the chilly night air.

But my friends kept laughing—all of them. Not in a mean way, just in a you-really-make-me-want-to-pee-in-my-pants way.

Finally, I started laughing too. I mean, what else could I do? Fortunately, I had been working out, playing soccer every day. And hey, what’s the big deal, really? The only difference between me standing around in my underwear and me standing around in my bikini is sunscreen. SPF 45.

Okay, but that didn’t occur to me then. It took months of therapy. “Bean! Poncho! Poncho!” I shouted in a panic. She looked at me totally confused. Was I was speaking in tongues? “Your poncho. Give it. Give it!”

She finally understood and quickly ripped off her poncho, tossing it to me like a hot potato. Jen and Bean helped me wrestle it over my head and down over my—thank God!—very cute matching bra and panties. Phew. I took a few quick breaths, feeling a bit better but still sweating like a pig that had just run the fifty-yard dash over hot coals.

I looked down at Bean’s groovy striped thrift-shop poncho. Wow. It was kind of cute. But it needed something. I looked around at what everyone else was wearing and pointed at Cate’s wide black belt. She whipped it right off and wrapped it around me, fastening it while Bean artfully arranged the folds of poncho fabric.

Amy and Jen watched with big eyes, seeming quite impressed by Cate and Bean’s impromptu styling skills. Carreyn looked a little scared and confused, like she was watching a horror movie in Japanese with no subtitles.

Finally, Bean and Cate stepped back, smiling, and admired their work. They fussed a little more, then both nodded proudly.

“Not bad,” said Cate.

Jen nodded too. “Yeah. Not bad. Kinda—”

“Not bad?” Bean threw up her arms, smiling enviously. “I wish I’d thought of this. You look muy caliente, Pais.”

“Really?” I asked.

Everyone—even Carreyn—nodded. I wiped the nervous sweat off of my forehead with the back of my wrist and took a few more deep breaths.
